Guests and employees at Arabian Nights often remark on how beautiful and talented the horses in our show are and this week we feature Canadian Warmbloods.
Canadian Warmbloods are known for their athleticism and steady temperament. Warmblood horses are celebrated worldwide for their dominance in Olympic equestrian disciplines, including Stadium Jumping, Dressage and Cross Country Jumping.
In the 19th century, large draft horses were bred with lighter breeds like Arabians in order to develop a larger, more athletic horse for military or farm use. Warmblood horses resulted. European varieties of Warmblood horses have been bred for more than 200 years, and many Canadian Warmbloods can trace their ancestry to those horses.
Warmblood horses are easily recognized by their size and calm attitude. Most breeds of warmbloods, including Canadian Warmbloods, are popular sport horses, and they are recognized by their long athletic stride, large stature, sloping shoulders and uphill build. Most Warmblood horses are between 16 and 18 hands tall. Warmbloods can be difficult to distinguish from Thoroughbred horses, but warmbloods are more muscular throughout their body, so their bulky appearance sets them apart.
Warmblood horses are both agile and strong, making them excellent candidates for jumping and Dressage riding, where flexibility is essential to performing intricate maneuvers. Canadian Warmbloods also excel at other tasks that require strength and a steady temper, including driving disciplines.
At Arabian Nights a pair of Canadian Warmbloods, Fred and Ginger, form one of our most reliable chariot driving teams, and the horses also excel as trick riding horses.
